About Ermelerhaus
It is one of the outstanding architectural examples of the Berlin Baroque and Classicism. In 1893, it was listed in the first list of “architectural and artistic monuments of Berlin” and was allowed to adorn its own stamp in GDR times. At the same time, it is more often than any other privately owned Berlin buildings listed in numerous rankings.
The origins of the building, which is known throughout Berlin, can be traced back to 1567, at its former location on Breite Straße 11, about 500 meters from the present location on Wallstraße. In the middle of the 18th century, the Ermelerhaus was redesigned into a rococo palace with characteristic wall and ceiling paintings, statues, reliefs and overdoors.
The Ermelerhaus received its present name from the tobacconist Ferdinand-Wilhelm Ermeler, who acquired the building in 1824 and with its salon and cultural events made it “the place to be” of Berlin. After the sale of the house by the last grandson, Richard Ermeler, the house went to the city of Berlin in 1913 and served in the following decades as a branch of the Märkisches Museum and was used after 1945 as a council library.
In 1966, the Ermelerhaus was torn out of the Breite Straße and rebuilt later until 1969 at its present location using numerous historical building and style elements. Thereafter, the Ermelerhaus was considered one of the first gastronomic addresses in Berlin. Today, the elaborate and lovingly refurbished historic eight Rococo-style rooms are popular for private and corporate events.
The five prestigious and historic rooms, decorated in the style of the outgoing Rococo, host civil weddings, weddings and celebrations of a special kind for up to 220 people. The adjoining art’otel Berlin Mitte offers 109 modern and comfortable rooms and suites for guests, and the Upside Down Bar & Restaurant also offers high quality food and drinks as catering. In Berlin’s historic harbor right outside the door, boats and ships make wonderful trips through Berlin’s canals.
